Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
All trout species (the Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Brook Charr) have been introduced to southern Africa from the Northern Hemisphere. Early British colonists released stock in the former Cape and Natal during the 1890s.Today the Rainbow Trout is a highly rated angling gamefish and fly-fishing is a popular sport. Trout farming has become a major industry that supplies fish for both angling and consumption. These fish need cool, clear, well aerated water in order to survive. They are characterized by, among other things, a lilac-mauve band that runs along both sides of the fish from the head to the caudal fin.

Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)
The Brown Trout is a first class sport angling species. It is not as common as the Rainbow Trout and prefers cooler waters. These fish mature within 24 months and may live for up to seven years. The Brook Charr, a third species of introduced trout, has not been reported since the 1960s.
