Vine-leaf Vagrant (Eronia cleodora)
This forest species is common throughout much of South Africa but more particularly in coastal vegetation. This white butterfly can be seen flying throughout the year.
Common Sailor (Neptis laeta)
The Sailor occurs in both forest and wooded areas. The flight of this butterfly is characteristically lazy. It rests frequently and flutters gently through the undergrowth.
Emperor Swallowtail (Papilio ophidicephalus)
The Emperor is South Africa's largest butterfly. It is restricted to temperate coastal and montane forests. Despite its unhurried flight, it is extremely difficult to catch.

Yellow Zulu (Alaena amazoula)
The Yellow Zulu is a small butterfly that can be found on rocky outcrops. Nearly half of all our butterflies belong to the Lycaenidae (the Blues, Coppers and Hairtails), the family to which this species belongs.
Gaudy Commodore (Precis octavia)
The Commodore appears in two colour forms: a blue winter form and a red summer form. This stunning creature is common in suburban gardens throughout the country.
Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
The Painted Lady is one of the most widespread and well known butterflies in the world. It feeds on a wide variety of host plants, is tolerant of cold conditions and the adults are able to migrate. All these factors contribute towards its success.
Whites, Sulphurs and Orange tips (Pieridae)
Butterflies belonging to the family Pieridae are usually white (hence the common name, WHITES) with red, orange, black or purple tips. These wing tips provided inspiration for this series of designs. Three images were based on colours found in South African species (red, orange and purple) and the remainders have been included to add balance to the design (blue, yellow and green). Serious lepidopterists (people who study butterflies) may be able to recognize a Scarlet Tip (Colotis danae), Smoky Orange Tip (Colotis evippe) and Bushveld Purple Tip (Colotis ione).
